MARATHON DES SABLES
In April 2015, I finished just outside the top 200 in the 30th edition of the Marathon des Sables (MDS), a gruelling multi-stage ultra-marathon through the Sahara Desert, one of the most inhospitable environments on earth. You have to be self-sufficient, carrying all your own food and equipment for the week on your back and sleep shoulder to shoulder with your fellow runners in ramshackle Berber tents. Sand storms appear out of nowhere and dance across the terrain engulfing everything in their path. Water is rationed and if you exceed the ration, you get a time penalty. It is no wonder then that the MDS is widely regarded as the toughest foot race on earth. It was a life changing experience which pushed me to my physical and mental limit and ignited my passion for endurance sports and adventure.
